THE ART OF ANTHROPOMORPHISM AND PERSONIFICATION IN BOOKS 📚 AND Movies 🍿
I don't think it would be a matter of surprise if I say that we knowingly or unknowingly have been a constant admirer of the literary devices - Anthropomorphism and Personification since our childhood through varied sources especially like that of books and movies .
As you all are aware, The attribution of human characteristics or behaviours to an animal, object, God is termed as anthropomorphism and Personification is the art of attributing a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form which turned out to be the backbone of various literary and fictional works to the present day.
Here I would like to confer about such eminent movies and books that formed the essence of our childhood days and engraved our vision of imagination.
We were lucky enough to have been grown in an era in which we listened to fables like the Crow and The Fox, The Ant and The Grasshopper, The Lion and The Mouse etc to sleep rather than binge watching on smartphones. All such stories were built solely upon anthropomorphism and the inquisitive mind of the children gets instilled with enthusiasm when they listen to these from their parents and grandparents as their bedtime stories and in schools from teachers . Moreover, these stories were successful in feeding the children with moral values in a taste of fiction and acted as a factor in encouraging their creative instinct.
Silver Wing by Kenneth Oppel, Animal Farm by George Orwell are other examples of brilliantly written animal fables which reflect human emotions, characteristics and life situations through animals.
Even in the stories of Thomas -The Tank Engine, Winnie the Pooh, or Peter Rabbit , Stuart Little by EB. White,Geronimo STilton by Elizabetta Dami, the characters act as literal humans.
The famous movies like Ice-Age, The jungle book, Night at the Museum, The Shrek, Finding Nemo, Zootopia, Lion King, Alvin and The Chipmunks and a whole lot of lists of the most fascinating movies had animals as it's cardinal characters and watching them in Television as well as in theatres gifted my curious mind with fascinating memories and moments .
The Disney movies were a large part of our childhood days and the literary device of personification is one of the major features attributed in them. It is enchanting to see the flowers, the trees and the mountains which form the rhythm of nature speaking in the language that we understand and helping our favourite character, the protagonist, to break free from the clutches of dark and blazon light by defeating evil . The Non-human characters also provided the audience with a positive atmosphere of hope and vitality even when the plot is going through it's darkest phase.
The Barbie and the other princess' movies formed the examples of such movies and mostly the characters sung songs which suggested the use of personification.
For instance :
In Beauty and The Beast, the plates, silverware, cups, teapots sang a song which uttered "Be our Guest and anything that isn't the character Belle, the town, or the beast is personified in some way or the other.
In Colors of the Wind from Pocahontas
Pocahontas sings about grinning bobcats and the voices of mountains. Everyone knows that bobcats can't grin, and mountains can't sing. They don't even have mouths still it was astonishing to watch them sing the song of happiness.
In Fact the Snowman from Frozen, The crow , the trees, flowers and flies from The Maleficent, The magical carpet from Aladdin etc is a blend of Human emotions in the heart of non -Human characters.
These movies and books reverberate a quiver of nostalgia in me and fill me with a passion to create, write and read more and more whenever I get to touch their engrossing effect. As I relish my childhood days ,I remember how excited I used to be when I read fables from the pages that haven't shed the fresh aroma of the newly bought books, listening to these as bed -time stories from Grandparents and the first stage experience in which I got to narrate one of the stories in a competition. The vision of watching these movies in Television as well as theatres is still afresh in my eyes gleaming with sheer delight and ecstasy. I assume that many of the worshippers of fictional literary works might have been bound by a curious and dreamy head as they tasted the very first sip of amusement from the books and movies which gave meaning to Non-human elements and it enlightened us with the light of creative incarnation and persuaded and encouraged us to dream a space for our own imagination in the fictional world.
